Problem with upgrading Notes client V10 to V11 on Windows Terminal server – Workaround

For one of my customers, I wanted to upgrade Notes Windows 10.0.1 to 11.0.1 on the Windows Terminal server.
Unfortunately, the installation ended with an error right at the beginning: “Error 1606. Unable to access network location % USERPROFILE%

I consulted HCL Support about the problem. This issue is a limitation of Notes Installer. The issue is that the environment variable (%USERPROFILE%) is set as DataPath in registry instead of absolute folder path, thus during upgrade the value of DataPath is considered as directory path but fails to load the value as it takes %userprofile% literally as path.

This issue is also happening while upgrading 10.0 client to 10.0.1 or from 10.0/10.0.1 to 11.0.1 notes client.

At this point of time HCL Development team has suggested the below workarounds:

  • Update the registry value of DataPath under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Lotus\Notes\10.0, replace %USERPROFILE% with actual User path such as C:\Users\, then proceed with upgrade.

I used this solution and then upgraded without any problems.
After the upgrade, I returned this parameter in the Windows registry.
  • Other option is to simply uninstall 10.0 and then install 11.0.1.

  1. Ales,
“Notes Client installation on Windows Terminal Server”.
I don’t think this combination is supported by HCL.

Additonally, I would like to thank you for sharing this useful information but what if customer faces other challenges later on wrt Notes Client being present on Windows Terminal Server.
Will that comes under HCL Support Scope? I guess no.
