Domino 10.0.1 – New SSL cipher configuration

Domino 10.0.1 now allows for easier configuration of SSL ciphers.
The SSL cipher options are in the Security tab of Internet Site documents or in the Ports tab of Server documents. Now clearly list all of the supported SSL ciphers, in order of strength Note that the

RSA_WITH_3DES_EDE_CBC_SHA cipher is categorized as a weak cipher as of Domino 10. This is a change from Domino 9.0.1.

Notes 10 – Pushing a custom color theme to Notes clients

The Notes 10 client allows users to change the color theme.
You can also set this up by using the Desktop Settings policy for all or some users.

This You can apply through the new notes.ini setting CUSTOM_THEME_COLOR=<R>,<G>,<B>
<R>,<G>,<B> represent the red, green, and blue values to use as the basis for the theme color.

For example: CUSTOM_THEME_COLOR=128,0,128

To push a notes.ini setting to clients, use the Custom Settings tab in a Desktop Settings policy.

To evaluate different colors for the theme and to see color RGB values, from Notes, click File – Preferences – Fonts, Colors, and Themes. With the IBM Theme selected, click Customize Theme. Next to Choose your theme, click the color box.

How to make a copy of Notes DB directly from the Domino console

Sometimes you need to make a copy of the database (not a replica) to another server or an existing server.

Most of the Notes client uses an option in the File – Application – New Copy. You select the location of the DB name and start creating a copy.

However, when creating a copy from a server to a server, all of the data first goes to your local Notes client and then back to the server. The whole operation will take a lot of time, and your computer and local network will be busy.

You can use the command on the Domino console.

First, add a parameter to the server notes.ini: CLUSTER_ADMIN_ON=1
Servers do not need to be a part of a Domino Cluster

You can now use these commands:
CL copy server1!!dbA.nsf server2!!dbB.nsf
This would create a regular non-replica copy of dbA.nsf on server1 as dbB.nsf on Server2

CL copy dbA.nsf dbB.nsf
This would create a regular non-replica copy of dbA.nsf as dbB.nsf on the same local server

CL copy server1!!dbA.nsf server2!!dbB.nsf REPLICA
This would create a replica copy of dbA.nsf on server1 as dbB.nsf on Server2

CL copy server1!!dbA.nsf server2!!dbB.nsf TEMPLATE
This would create a template copy (only design, no data) of dbA.nsf on server1 as dbB.nsf on Server2

Domino 10 – Forcing a full database replication

Since Domino 10.0 you can use to force a full database replication when replicas of a database get out of sync.

This method is an alternative to clearing the database replication history (File – Replication – History)

Clearing the database replication history

For simplicity, you can use the command (on Domino console):
Replicate < server > < database > -F

“Top 20” Fix List IBM Domino/Notes 10.0/10.0.1

IBM has released a list “top 20” Fix List Domino/Notes 10.

Notes/Domino 10.0/10.0.1 contains fixes for approximately 2000 known issues. As IBM said: “This list was compiled to identify the issues that most significantly impact customers”.

Official announcement and IBM Fix List – Link

Client :

  • SPR #RREN8G2N6L – Fixed a printing defect that caused the printed output to be different thant what was being displayed on screen for a MIME email message. For example, if hide details was selected to suppress the to/cc list, that info would print out. With this fix, it will remain suppressed.
  • SPR #SJCN8K6KYX – Vertical Scroll bars will now appear in mail preferences Mail signature rich text dialog if typing in a longer signature. This will allow the user to scroll up and down making it easier to edit the signature
  • SPR #BHUY7PEEQ9 – Notes 10.0 will now spellcheck across multiple languages on windows in a single document. This feature is not available on the mac. This feature is on by default and can be disabled with a new ini SPELL_DISABLE_MULTIPLE_LANG_CHECK=1
  • SPR #CSMHAG9M5K – Fixed numerous display issues with Notes client on 4k displays
  • SPR #NKAH9RWEK9 – Fixed an issue with blank/generic icons appearing for shortcut link attachments. On Windows, a user can create a shortcut link to a file. This shortcut has the icon of the associated program. Prior to this fix, if the shortcut was attached in a rich text field in Notes, the icon would be a generic icon. This was a regression introduced in 9.0.
  • SPR #TYITA548NJ – Fixed an issue in iNotes related to auto-save that would lead to either duplicate attachments being sent or multiple attachments beginning with ATTxxx in the attachment name. These duplicate attachments would show up in sent or draft mail.
  • SPR #ZKCO8ZZ9ZU – Increased the block sender list by 10x. Now if you choose the action for [Deliver Sender’s mail to Junk] you can add 10 times as many senders/users to the list
  • SPR #MWID7LWRJ7 – Fixed an issue where the ini ShowPreviewCollapsedInitially=1 would not honor all cases of collapsing the preview pane in the mail inbox. Now this ini can be pushed out via policy and handle all cases for primary user or mail file delegate
  • SPR #MPAA6PQCHK – Added support for the Notes client to send mail directly to an SMTP server that supports STARTTLS. Prior to this fix, sending SMTP outbound mail directly to the internet using Notes Client with an SSL enabled account yielded an SSL handshake error. Both client and template code were modified for this fix

Server:

  • SPR #MJTM9R2P8P – Fixed a potential crash involving both Domino and Traveler when a bad document was encountered
  • SPR #MIAS99HP2S – Fixed a potential Domino Server hang that could occur with databases that were <ODS 51
  • SPR #LMAN7QPHSU – Fixed mail policy Sender Colors to accept multiple values. Before this fix, the policy would not work if it contained more than one sender name.
  • SPR #KLIN5GHRZR – Fixed an LDAP performance issue. The Domino LDAP server has slow response time when search filters contain attributes that are telephone numbers. This fix enables LDAP queries to use FT index for locating the telephonenumber attribute. It can be enabled by adding LDAPUseFTSearchTelephone=1 to the INI file. One caveat is that the search must match the telephone number exactly, including parentheses, dashes, or other non-numeric characters.
  • SPR #TOCL9DVN4K – Prior to this fix, if the 64k limit of password reset authorities was exceeded, password authorities would be removed. After this fix, an error is displayed instead, and no password reset authorities are removed.
  • SPR #MZHO7PM4CC – Fixed an issue that would prevent mail routing to occur If mail.box was being repaired when router is started.
  • SPR #HSPR9DKAAT – Fixed a potential Domino Server crash in database code
  • SPR #DCOE7X7L3W – Corrected an issue that would show an incorrect warning that would not go away after running Fixup. The message was, WARNING: Residual form bucket bitmap optimization failed validation test. Please run fixup on this database.
  • SPR #JEKY5ARNPA – Soft deletions are now maintained when creating a new replica. This fix is off by default and can be enabled with the new ini REPL_SOFT_DELETES. To enable the fix, set REPL_SOFT_DELETES=1.
  • SPR #MLAT9FTTE4 – Fixed a policy issue in pubnames.ntf which would prevent the discover page from being suppressed on Notes client

Mail Subject encoding problem after upgrading to 9.0.1 FP10

I upgraded the Domino server to 9.0.1 FP10.
If users received SMTP mail, there was a bad encoding characters in message Subject.
The subject looked like this: ?UTF-8?Q?Datov=C3=A9_schr=C3=A1nky:Nov=
The problem was only in the Subject of the email.

I installed IF FP4, but the problem was still the same.

I had to install IF5, which removed the problem.

How to publish Domino 10 statistics to New Relic

IBM Domino 10.0 you can set up Domino to publish Domino statistics to an external monitoring service via New Relic .

You can publish Domino statistics to New Relic, a third-party, web-based monitoring application. New Relic allows you to visually monitor statistics in real time on multiple Domino servers from one dashboard.

This statistics are reported through a New Relic plugin called DominoStats.
Statistics are published once a minute and are retained for 24 hours.
The Domino Stats Plugin New Relic is FREE with limited features.

What you need to do in this case:

  • create a New Relic account
  • add a setting to the server notes.ini file to enable the server to report its statistics.

How to enable Domino statistics monitoring in New Relic :

  • Create an account at www.newrelic.com.
  • Log in to your account.
  • Click the arrow at the top, right of the New Relic window and select Account Settings.
  • Copy your license key in the License key field.
  • On each Domino server that you want to report statistics to New Relic add the following notes.ini setting: NEWRELIC_LICENSE_KEY=
  • Wait a few minutes for the initial metrics to be published.
  • Open the DominoStats plugin, click DominoStats in APM/Plugins

A summary page that you see when you open the plugin reports key monitoring statistics for each server that you have configured to report to New Relic.

IBM Domino Mobile Apps (IDMA) for iPad

IBM Domino Mobile Apps (IDMA) is access to Notes applications from Apple iPad without the need for re-design Notes applications.

The access to the application is only for registered beta testers for now.

I was lucky because I was included in the IDMA beta program.

I received an email with a link to the application in the “TestFlight app”, which was automatically installed on the iPad. Through iTunes I needed to copy my ID file from the Notes client to the application.

When I open IDMA, I enter the password for my ID file as for the Notes client. Then I can open an application from my server or from local iPad (local) .

IDMA open application

Opened apps will show “Recent applications” as Home by default.. The last 12 are displayed.

IDMA – Recent applications

However, I can open my Workspace. Open / On My Device / Bookmark.nsf

IDMA – open Workspace

For now, Workspace options are limited, but you can, for example, change the background, arrange icons, and so on.

IDMA – Workspace options

Most of us appreciate the ability to replicate applications. This means I can run offline applications just like I am used to from your Notes clients.

Just set the application to be offline. You will see the replication setting screen and you can start replicating.

IDMA- offline settings app

Replication can be found in the replication server as in the Notes client.

IDMA – Replication

The application is in beta. So far with limited functionality.
The iPad does not support Java (JavaAgents and xPages that you used in your applications).

IBM Domino Mobile Apps also supports older versions of servers.
I tested Domino 9.0.1 FP9.

I think this is a good thing from HCL and I look forward to the next version. A lot of users will certainly welcome this access to Notes applications.
